Moving a WordPress Blog

If you have a WordPress installation on Server A and want to move it to a different folder and still be on Server A, WordPress has a guide with 13 steps that has never worked for me but once.

It involves changing the URL of your blog, which breaks it before it fixes it and requires you to have the exact same files in location 1 and 2. That’s fine until you want to move one installation to another spot with a newer installation that you can’t just download anymore. And with WordPress, it seems like updates drop every other day.

So, here’s my guide:

  1. In your old admin panel, go to Tools > Export
  2. Install WordPress in your new directory.
  3. Go to Tools > Import.

Not real sure why you have to rename stuff, noodle around your databases and poke inside your wp-config file.

Justin has been around the Internet long enough to remember when people started saying “content is king”.

He has worked for some of Indiana’s largest companies, state government, taught college-level courses, and about 1.1M people see his work every year.

You’ll probably see him around Indianapolis on a bicycle.
