In 2009 I was driving home after work. This being right before I set out on my own, I was looking at ways to advertise my new business. I was on the phone with Yellow Pages. I had done some research wondering “Do the Yellow Pages work for businesses ?” I wasn’t finding much evidence one way or another. It’s hard to tell for most businesses. But the sales rep was so desperate to sell me an ad in the phone book he lied to get me to do it.
On five different occasions in the last two weeks someone has asked me, “What’s the point of blogging? Why should I be blogging?” Even if you want to be blogging every day, you may not know what to talk about.
It just doesn’t work. It’s blown out of proportion. It’s a fantasy to think that everyone will happily share information about every hardware store, beer, battery, and car.
It reminds me of that old Andy Griffith Show bit where Andy and Barney are too afraid to tell Aunt Bea her pickles are “kerosene cucumbers”. So they just say, “Oh, yeah, it’s nice!” Or when they try to hook up a young lady with Gomer Pyle. “He’s…nice! Real nice! He’s nice!”
